A New Way Of Seeing

When people think of a pattern, most think of the dogtooth, a classic Breton or polka dots. Not art director and photographer, Anna Murray, and textiles designer, Grace Winteringham, the founders of PATTERNITY. Described as the ‘world’s leading specialist organisation dedicated to pattern’, they spot patterns in huddled Dalmatians, soap suds and the sky.

Part image library, design consultancy, studio and education hub, it has partnered with Apple, School of Life, The Barbican and The V&A. Now, Grace and Anna have the unusual task of re-imagining hoarding at Greenwich Peninsula. It’ll be large scale and hand-painted, surrounding the Upper Riverside construction site from September 2016. Based on the water that surrounds us, Frequency will celebrate the tidal patterns from the River Thames — we can’t wait to see the finished thing.

In the meantime, their Instagram feed is worth the scrolling. Filled with intricate patterns found in nature and intercepted with philosophical quotes about our existence, you get the impression that PATTERNITY are onto something rare: they spot the complex but beautiful details we miss in our busy, busy lives. Here are our favourite picks from their Instagram. Isn’t it just mesmerising?
