Socks: The Art of Care and Repair by Celia Pym

Date

6 December - 9 March

Time

Tues - Fri | 10am - 6pm Saturday | 10am - 5pm Sunday | 11am - 4pm

This December, NOW Gallery presents its 2024 Fashion Commission, Socks: The Art of Care and Repair, by London textile artist Celia Pym.

This free exhibition highlights sustainability in fashion, celebrating the act of mending through darning. Central to the display is an installation of 488 socks, mended by the Surrey Square Primary School community using waste socks from the industry. Pym’s own mended socks, reflecting personal care and creativity, will also be featured.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own socks to mend, with materials and workshops available. Pym’s interactive videos and step-by-step guides will help visitors create their own ‘visible mend’ to take home or display in the gallery. Expert-led darning workshops will run throughout the exhibition.

Pym says, “Mending a sock is a small act of care, with a ripple effect. It adds to the story of an item, turning damage into something more meaningful. I'm excited to share these skills with the community at NOW Gallery.”

Exclusive Celia Pym X Waste Yarn Projects socks will be available to purchase, alongside Pym's celebrated book 'On Mending'.
